Crop an image

Crop your image

The free Vivlab crop tool trims, rotates and resizes your images right in your browser. Your files never leave your computer.

Pick a format, adjust the area, then download the cropped image.

How it works

Crop an image in 3 steps

1

Open your image

Drag a file or click to select one; the crop frame drops onto the photo right away.

2

Adjust the frame

Pull the handles to set the area, lock a ratio such as 1:1 or 16:9, rotate in 90° steps or apply a mirror effect.

3

Export the result

Pick the WebP, PNG or JPEG format and the quality, then download; the crop dimensions appear under the preview.

Cropping your images the right way

Why crop?

Cropping lets you re-center the subject, cut out the clutter and fit an image to wherever it will be shown. A well-framed photo catches the eye straight away and gives your site and your posts a cleaner look.

Choosing a format or ratio

Every channel has its own proportions: 1:1 for a profile photo or a square post, 16:9 for a banner, 4:3 or 3:4 for portrait and landscape formats. Picking the right ratio keeps social networks from cropping or stretching your images.

Rotation and export

You can also rotate or flip the image before exporting it. For the result, PNG stays lossless (great for sharp visuals and transparency), while JPEG and WebP compress with some loss for a lighter file.

The Vivlab tip

Before you confirm, check that the main subject stays inside the kept area and has a little breathing room around it. For a visual meant for the web, WebP gives the best balance between quality and file size.

Frequently asked questions

Cropping without mistakes

Which ratio for which use?

1:1 suits a profile picture or a product shot, 16:9 a cover or a slide, 3:4 a vertical portrait. Free mode lets you draw any area you like.

PNG, JPEG or WebP?

PNG stays lossless and keeps transparency, ideal for a logo or a screenshot. JPEG suits photos, and WebP brings both strengths together. A slider sets the quality for JPEG and WebP.

Does cropping degrade the image?

Cropping only removes the pixels around the area you keep, leaving the rest untouched. Any loss comes from re-encoding, so choose PNG or a high quality to preserve as much detail as possible.

Can I straighten a tilted photo?

Rotation works in quarter turns, plus a horizontal or vertical mirror. That is perfect for a photo shot sideways, but there is no free-angle straightening to fix a slight tilt.

Are my images sent online?

No. Cropping and exporting happen in your browser, and the file is never uploaded. You can crop a sensitive document without it leaving your workstation.
