Frequently asked questions

Everything about French VAT

What are the VAT rates in France?

The standard rate is 20 %. Then come the intermediate rate at 10 % (restaurants, transport, renovation work), the reduced rate at 5.5 % (food, books, energy) and the special rate at 2.1 % (reimbursed medicines, the press). Corsica and the overseas territories use their own rates.

How do I find the net amount from the gross?

You divide the gross by one plus the rate, not the other way round. At 20 %, a price of 120 € gross gives 100 € net (120 / 1.20), so 20 € of VAT. Taking 20 % off the gross would give 96 €, which is wrong: switch the selector to gross and the tool handles it.

Do I have to charge VAT?

Under the French franchise en base scheme, no. As long as your turnover stays below the thresholds, around 91,900 € for goods and 36,800 € for services, you invoice without VAT. Your invoices must then carry the wording « TVA non applicable, article 293 B du CGI ».

Which rate applies to my product?

The rate depends on the nature of the good or service, not on your preference. Most sales fall under 20 %, food and books under 5.5 %, eat-in catering under 10 %. For a borderline case, the tax authority publishes the official list of items concerned.

Are my amounts sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. You can price a quote or check an invoice without leaving any trace online.
